LITUYA, THE BAY OF GIANT WAVES

Francis E. Caldwell is considered the historian of this unique part of Glacier Bay National Park, and his book describing the area, Land of the Ocean Mists, was reprinted in 2003.

Four giant waves, not tsunami, have occurred inside Lituya Bay, and rushed out into the ocean. From 1800 to 1958, the bay has been repeatedly devastated by these mostly unexplainable giant waves, the last reached 1,720 feet in elevation!

Hundreds have died at Lituya Bay since it’s discovery by the ill-fated LaPerous Expedition in 1786. Tlingit Legends, pioneer mountaineering, gold mining, fur trapping, giant brown bears and more keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
